29 May The Beautiful Game for a Greater Good: Nick Leventis and the Bulgaria Charity Football Match
Sport has always been Nick Leventis’s language. Racing cars, skydiving above Everest, abseiling the Shard, surfing the biggest waves on earth — but in 2018, he swapped all of that for a football pitch in Bulgaria.
That year, Nick took part in a charity football match alongside Dimitar Berbatov — the Bulgarian football legend who built his career at Tottenham, Manchester United, and Fulverton, and one of the most celebrated players his country has ever produced. The occasion was fundraising, the cause close to both men’s hearts: supporting children’s orphanages in Bulgaria and contributing to the conservation of the country’s Orthodox churches.
It was, in its way, a perfect expression of what Nick has always believed — that the vehicle matters less than the destination. A race track, a rope, a football pitch: whatever it takes to show up for the people and places that need support.
The Bulgaria match also reflects a thread that runs quietly through everything Nick does philanthropically. His family’s foundation, the A.G. Leventis Foundation, has for decades funded the restoration of Orthodox churches across Cyprus, Greece, and beyond. Nick has spoken of wanting to carve his own path — to do “something different” — but the reverence for cultural heritage and community roots clearly runs deep. In Bulgaria, both causes came together on the same afternoon: the children in the orphanages, and the churches that anchor the communities around them.
